Stratford Central School is a grade 7-12 school in downtown Stratford, Ontario; the home of the World Famous Stratford Shakespearean Festival. The school is considered the “arts” school for the Avon Maitland District School Board. Courses are offered in all four arts areas: dance, drama, music, and visual arts.
In music, students may choose from courses in wind and percussion, voice, guitar, and orchestral strings. As well as courses, the secondary division offers a grade nine Concert Band; Central Singers, an SATB concert choir; Vocal Chords, an SATB vocal chamber ensemble; RamsHorns, a brass quintet; a senior Jazz Band, plus a senior Symphonic Band. These groups all perform in the community, but twice a year they hold their own concert in the school which showcases the talents of all the performing groups.
The Symphonic Band includes students from grades 10-12 and performs music at a grade 3-4 band level. Each year, they perform at the annual Commencement ceremonies, in the Kiwanis Music Festival, at their own concerts, and have performed at MusicFest regionals and nationals. They are an ensemble that is highly praised for their dedication, commitment and ability.
Central Singers is a four part choir from grades 9-12. They perform both accompanied and a cappella repertoire. They compete at the Kiwanis Music Festival, at their own concerts, and have performed at the Ontario Vocal Festival where they have often received a gold standing, and at MusicFest nationals where they were awarded silver.
Both the Symphonic Band and Central Singers are directed by the Stratford Central Head of the Arts, Paula Ortelli.
